Milwaukee’s Original Craft Beer Specialist
Benno’s first opened the doors in November of 1980 in the former Horvath’s location on the corner of 73rd and National Ave. Marty Weigel, his mother Monica and brother Benno started the business with 12 beers on draught which was quite original at that time. Both Marty and Benno met their wives (both named Suzanne) at this location.
In June 0f 1989 Benno’s moved to the current location taking over the former Ghostrider’s on 74th and Greenfield. A year later they increased the number of draught beers to 30 with the focus on American Craft Beers.
A few years after opening Benno’s started to do vending at the Wisconsin State Fair selling wine coolers and beer. In 1991 Marty and Benno split the family business with Benno creating The Micro at the state fair. Marty and his wife Suzanne continued to operate Benno’s Genuine Bar and Grill raising their four children (Dylan, Halie, Jamie and Carly) above the restaurant.
Stop in for a few original items that they have kept along the way include the Friday night fish fry, the Benno Burger and the Super Taco, which are still very much part of the current menu.
